Articulating paper colors: what color can and cannot tell you
Color helps make a transferred mark visible or distinguish a documented step; it does not give the mark an inherent force value.
Short answer
The color of articulating paper describes the visible marking color. It can help an operator see a mark and, when a workflow deliberately assigns different colors to different observations, keep those observations distinct. Color hue, mark size, or mark darkness does not by itself quantify force, pressure, timing, diagnostic significance, or product accuracy.
What the color describes
- Indicator color
- The visible hue intended to transfer from the marking material.
- Transferred mark
- The color record left where the indicator contacted a surface.
- Contrast
- The visual difference between a mark and the surface beneath it. Actual visibility depends on the material, surface, lighting, and observation conditions.
- Workflow label
- A meaning deliberately assigned to a color in a documented workflow. The color itself does not create that meaning.
What color can help communicate
- Where a visible color transfer was observed.
- Which recorded observation used a chosen color, when the operator documents that convention.
- Whether a requested product specification names a particular color.
These are descriptive uses. They do not establish a clinical conclusion or a universally preferred color.
What color cannot establish on its own
- A numerical occlusal force or pressure value.
- The timing or sequence of contact unless a separate validated method records it.
- A diagnosis, treatment decision, or need for adjustment.
- Clinical superiority, accuracy, sensitivity, or safety.
- An orderable SKU or a valid combination with any listed thickness, material, or format.
ASHUR public color master data
The current approved ASHUR public fact baseline lists these colors for the Dental Articulating Paper product group:
- White
- Red
- Yellow
- Blue
- Green
- Black
This list confirms only the approved color names at product-group level. It does not prove that every color is available in every material, thickness, format, package, country, or SKU.
How to record color in a product inquiry
- Name the product family and ask ASHUR to confirm the exact current model.
- Record the requested color as one attribute, not as a complete model identity.
- Confirm material, nominal thickness, format, packaging, and destination separately.
- Request current controlled product information before treating the combination as orderable.
Color versus mark appearance
Hue identifies the color, while area and darkness describe aspects of the resulting mark. Published general evidence cautions against interpreting mark area alone as a direct measure of force. The same boundary applies to color intensity: a darker-looking mark should not be converted into an unsupported force or pressure value.
